Few days back I got invited to Gary Taxali’s Book/Product launch coming up on the 22nd of September in Toronto. I so wish I could go, I really wanted to meet Gary, the creator of the wonderful toy monkey, but I will be in Morocco at that time. Here is a little about Gary, his work and his wonderful new picture book.
Award-winning illustrator, artist, author and toy designer, Gary Taxali is a very funny man. He loves to be silly and has newly released a book This Is Silly! that takes children into a world of fun, creativeness and silliness with a cast of silly characters like Silly Sol, Manic Monkey, Silly Willy and their many pals. Gary’s distinctive retro style strangely looks great even on a children’s book. Here are a few pages from the book:
Chandigarh-born Gary, migrated to Toronto when he was only one. Encouraged by his parents, he paid attention to his artistic streak and started illustrating at a young age. Inspired by vintage books his illustration style is very distinct and has been seen in many well known magazines and books. In 2005, he launched his first vinyl toy, The Toy Monkey, which included a special edition along with a silkscreen print commissioned by The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Here is the adorable monkey (this one is a limited edition for the Whitney Museum Store).
Gary has won over 500 awards including a Gold from The Society of Illustrators, a National Gold Addy and Shortlist for a Cannes Lion and in 2009, received a Grammy nomination for Best Package for Aimee Mann’s album “@#%&*! Smilers“.
