Woven Classics

Trained at Chelsea College of Art and Design London in Woven Textiles and National Institute of Fashion Technology Delhi in Fashion, Gaurav Jai Gupta makes hand-woven and sustainable clothes, accessories and product for interior spaces.

A finalist of the British Council and ELLE’s Young Creative Fashion Entrepreneur Awards 2010, he debuted at the prestigious ORIGIN: The London Craft fair in 2007 under his studio AKAARO and has been a regular ever since. Gaurav’s work looks at the fine balance between craft and design and highlights the importance of handcrafting.

 

Gaurav was invited to co-curate and exhibit at London Calling in Tokyo on the commemoration of 150 years of British and Japanese Friendship in October 2008,which was inaugurated by the legendary designer Jimmy Choo. Following this, he was asked by Jimmy Choo to design a fabric for a pair of sling back.

In 2009, Gaurav was selected for the prestigious “Shared Talent India” project, an initiative by Centre of Sustainable Fashion, London, for promoting Indian sustainable textiles which was exhibited at London Fashion Week and was supported by Defra,U.K.

 

In 2010, Gaurav was invited to show at Bath Festival in U.K and a special show in Wales called All Tied Up. He debuted in India in October 2010 showing his Spring/Summer 2011 Women’s wear collection at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. He was short-listed as one of the candidates to represent India at Asian Designer Collection 2011 in Tokyo as a part of Japan Fashion Week.

Gaurav was awarded the “Grazia Young designers award” for textile innovation for his debut collection and will be representing India officially at the International Apparel Federation Designer Awards in Mexico in October 2011.

His design practice addresses issues with in the context of design education in India; as a part of which he regularly conducts workshops, talks, judges and teaches at various design institutes. Gaurav has also set up a weave studio at Sushant School of Design in Gurgaon; which he is heading at the moment.
