Quirky Handloom Weaves

Fashion designer Debashri Samanta grew up in south Kolkata, India in a family of doctors and engineers. Designing was something individual to her with no one to influence or tweak her perception of art. Debashri always loved ideating interesting silhouettes. Even as a child she would go through her mum’s closet, a designer’s delight with all sorts of traditional weaves like Tant, Dhakai, Jamdani, Paithani and Kanjeevarams and create interesting outfits for herself.

Debashri graduated from the prestigious NIFT Mumbai, winning the most commercial designer award from Pantaloons Retail India Ltd. In 2011 she started her eponymous label with the dream to recreate edgy, playful and futuristic versions of traditional weaves in next-gen/new-age looks for women with worldly tastes.

Debashri’s summer/resort collection is called Summer Houses. The look is an unconventional mix of smart, simple and sexy with a hint of boyish appeal. To complete the look metal house brooches, hand embroidered fedoras and peep toe oxfords were created. Here are a few of her designs:

Label Debashri Samanta is an all-handwoven clothing line. They are anti-prints! The label offers designer garments made from rich and intricate weaves woven on simple handlooms.
