Designer Mita Naidu was born in Kolkata, India and raised in Canada. She went to Canterbury Highschool (performing arts highschool for ballet), Tisch School of the Arts (New York University) for ballet, finished up her BA at UBC in Anthropology and Asian Studies, then completed an MA in Human Kinetics and an MHA in Health Administration from UBC. Mita’s graduate work was conducted through a South Asian feminist lens. She also conducted research projects that dealt with women’s status in healthcare. All of which greatly influences her design aesthetic.
Mita has been drawn to fashion her entire life, stemming from her mum’s heritage collection of saris to her work in high-end retail. In 2010 Mita launched her brand Lotus Eye, a luxury brand through which she designs digital graphic print saris, harem pants, dresses, kaftans and other pieces. Here are a few of her designs:
Mita was recently recognized by the Vancouver Parks Board as one of 12 “Remarkable Women in 2012″ for her work in fashion and the arts. Dance continues to be a strong component in her life and work.
