Mid-Century Design meets Ancient Mythology

California based animator and illustrator Sanjay Patel started drawing at the age of four and by the time he was in high school, he knew he wanted to be an animator. After his second year at the California Institute of Arts(CalArts) he was recruited by Pixar Animation Studios, where he has been happily bringing characters to life for the past 14 years. He has worked on numerous well-loved films like Monsters. Inc, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and Toy Story 3.

Sanjay loves the fact that images tell stories and has published two books that celebrate Indian mythology and culture through design and storytelling in a fun and modern way. His first book The Little Book of Hindu Deities is a collection of illustrative biographical profiles of monsters, demons, noble warriors, and divine divas.  Here are a few pages from the book:

His second book Ramayana- Divine Loophole features a graphic retelling with more than 100 vibrant and whimsical illustrations inspired by the mid-20th-century designs, as well as sketches of the work in progress, maps, and a detailed glossary of the cast of characters—demons, gods, animals, and humans—who make up this epic story.

Working under the brand name Ghee Happy, apart from the books Sanjay also creates products and apparels that celebrate Indian mythology. To enjoy more of Sanjay’s work click here.
